The front cover depicts a fern called “kogomi” in Japanese, and the back cover depicts a fern called “oni-kogomi”. I found it interesting that the same ferns have different vegetation, with the difference that kogomi prefers sunny areas and oni-kogomi prefers shady areas. Ferns that grow in early spring are cute because the tips of their leaves are curled up and have lots of hairs on them to protect them from the chilly spring wind. The skeleton of the crucian carp is arranged across the front and back cover. If you look closely at the skeleton, you will see that it has many functions in its small body. The insect in the lower left corner of the back cover is a small moth called Geometra dieckmanni. These are seemingly unassuming motifs, but the forms created by nature are interesting and, like complex machines, I never get tired of looking at them.
